Tips for best results:
Like any good book nerd with a website that advertises for authors, I watch our stats obsessively. A number of factors are clear success indicators, linked directly to the specifics of a listing. None of them are big surprises, but that makes them all the more worth mentioning because so many authors seem to ignore them. Golden rule for advertising your own product: be proud of it, but don’t be in love with it. Don’t be so enamored of what you’ve created that you lose objectivity when making decisions on how best to market it. It’s far too easy to rationalize bad decisions based on your perception of the value of your product vs. what the consumer perception is.
- Price. Of course, price is the main factor. Readers join our list because they’re looking for deals they wouldn’t normally find. Seems fairly straightforward, and yet many authors submit at $2.99, which in some cases is their regular price. Look, I understand the rationalization. I felt the same way at one point: at $2.99 for a full-length novel, how could anyone see that as expensive? If I can just get some exposure I’m sure I’ll see some sales! Right? Wrong. Not from a service like ours, not in any quantity. Bottom line: people want to feel like they got a bargain. stat: we see a 91.3% average drop in downloads from free vs. $0.99. If all you’re after is exposure, use free tools that only cost time (like social media). Don’t pay for something you can’t attach an ROI to.
- Cover. People do judge a book by its cover, especially people who are browsing an entire list of books all on sale. Does your cover speak to your genre? Does it “pop”? Our criteria goes by review stats, but in the event of multiple submissions for the same dates, we absolutely take cover into account, because we know the author with the better cover is going to see better results.
- Description. Less is more. Again, you have to remember readers are looking at your book in a list of other books… browsing. You need to grab their attention fast! How can you make yours more appealing than others? Keep it two lines, three max. Think of it like a thesis statement. Make it exciting, or heart warming, or fantastic depending on the genre of your book but get right down to the basic plot of your story, right away. Use the right words for your genre–be “in character” for your description. Be sure it compliments your cover, and vice versa. stat: in reviewing listings of same price and genre, I have found that the ones with shorter descriptions perform 23% better. I’d take that kind of bump any day. Pay attention to what you submit! Misspelled words, missing words, truncated paragraphs… we see it all the time.

These spots will fill quickly, be sure to submit as soon as you’re able. If your spot is full, we will send notification. To receive a free listing, your book must fit solidly within the mystery genre. eBookBetty reserves the right to decline any listing for any reason. When submitting, include the words ‘FREE LISTING’ in the ‘Additional Information’ box at the bottom of the form. For better chances of acceptance,be sure to specify the entire date range your book can be listed. We will only accept one listing per author.
